This lady suffered from blepharospasm (spontaneous and uncontrolled blinking and strong closure of the eyelids) and, as not unfrequently in these patients, ptosis (weakened action of the muscle that opens the lids, or, in other cases, weakening of its attachment). The most common treatment of spasms, weakening of the muscles that close the eyes by injection of medication, was not effective.Through an incision in the upper eyelid the muscle that lifts the lid was shortened on both sides. Not only did this correct the sagging (ptosis), the spasms also diminished spontaneously and durably to a minimal level.
